Big Read tackles ‘The Maltese Falcon’

"This year’s Big Read book selection is The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. Usually referred to as a 'classic,' it’s considered the foundation stone of the hard-boiled detective genre. As aptly stated by admirer Raymond Chandler, the author of many mystery novels also ranked classics, 'Hammett took murder out of the Venetian vase and dropped it in the alley.' With Falcon, Hammett folded up and put aside the neat crimes of the 'Clue' board-game territory. With this book you find yourself in the menacing shadows of dark city streets filled with tough guys, tough talk, and tough times. Goodbye to 'Mr. Plum, in the Library, with a pearl handled revolver.'

"If you’re 'Mr. Couch Potato in the living room with the remote,' get up and head over to the main Vigo County Public Library or one of the branch libraries. They have the full information on the Big Read and the programming related to The Maltese Falcon. Plenty of copies of the book are available."
